Back to Bob's Portfolio

Bob Krist is a freelance photographer who works regularly on assignment for magazines such as National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, Islands, Endless Vacation, and Gourmet. His photos from these worldwide assignments have won awards in the Pictures of the Year, Communication Arts, and World Press Photo competitions. During his work, he has been stranded on a glacier in Iceland, nearly run down by charging bulls in southern India, and knighted with a cutlass during a Trinidad voodoo ceremony. He was named "Travel Photographer of the Year "94" by the Society of American Travel Writers and his work was featured on the cover and in a 10 page portfolio in a recent issue of the prestigious publication, Communication Arts. Along with his magazine work, Bob photographed the coffee-table books Caribbean, and West Point: The US Military Academy. An accomplished writer as well as photographer, he served for seven years as contributing editor and photography columnist at Travel & Leisure magazine. Currently, Bob is a contributing editor at both National Geographic Traveler and Popular Photography magazines, where he writes photography columns, as well as writing and photographing how-to and feature articles for several other national publications, including National Wildlife, International Wildlife, Outdoor and Nature Photography, Caribbean Travel & Life, and Outside. Bob recently lectured at National Geographic headquarters in Washington DC as part of the Society's "Masters of Photography" series. He has been the keynotespeaker at the national convention of the Society of American Travel Writers and at regional meetings of the American Society of Media Photographers. Krist appears periodically as photography correspondent on CBS This Morning and teaches travel photography workshops at the Maine Photo Workshops. A former professional actor, he will host the premiere season of "Nature's Best Photography", a 13 part series for National Wildlife Productions on the Outdoor Life Network. His latest book, Secrets of Lighting on Location, was published by Amphoto in June of '96. His next book, Spirit of Place: The Art of Professional Travel Photography, also by Amphoto, will be published in Spring of '99. Bob lives in New Hope, Pennsylvania, with his wife Peggy and their three sons, Matthew, Brian, and Jonathan.
